Marshall Project Sheds Light on “How incarcerated parents are losing their children forever.”

The Marshall Project released an article on December 2, 2018 titled “How Incarcerated Parents Are Losing Their Children Forever.” The article leads with a hidden fact about our “child protective services” when it comes to incarcerated parents:

Mothers and fathers who have a child placed in foster care because they are incarcerated — but who have not been accused of child abuse, neglect, endangerment, or even drug or alcohol use — are more likely to have their parental rights terminated than those who physically or sexually assault their kids.

The article has several videos and interviews and grapples what is in the best interest of the child when it comes to supporting children of incarcerated parents. Overall, the article suggests that we can do more for these families in maintaining relationships, laws are one start, but also undoing the conditions of poverty that lead families into both incarceration and the child welfare system.
